/ Control of HELM boots : A perfect leather boot?
HELM Boots was founded in 2009 by Joshua Bingaman and has worked hard to change the men’s footwear industry with uncompromising, classic styles.
By Declan Tan Chukka Downloads for our personal favorites, Muller Tick Downloads, their offers are classic and can work with almost any season.
But what really sets them apart from many other chukchi or Chelsea boots on the market is their craftsmanship.

Visit any product page on the HELM download page and you will quickly understand what it’s about.
Take, for example, the Mueller Tick, which we absolutely love in style:
With its solid Horween Chromexcel leather shell, it is designed to last a lifetime.
Leather snobs like to hunt Corvin shoes because of their rich heritage.
The Horween Leather Company, founded in 1905, is based in the United States and produces the tanning of all types of leather. Over time, a beautiful patina forms on the skin, which counteracts a lot of wear and tear.
As you have noted in the description above, these boots are made of full grain leather, as opposed to top leather or genuine leather.
What does this mean and why is it important?
Here is a brief description of their main differences:
Genuine leather / Reinforced leather
It’s the skin the marketers made you love. Although it causes a leather-like odour and resembles leather, it hardly permeates the leather itself or, to be honest, since between 10 and 90% of the product sold contains leather.
What is pupil glue?
It is a mixture of tannin residues mixed with polyurethane or latex (source).
The product therefore inevitably cracks or dries out with age.
High quality leather
The outer skin layer is described as the skin with the highest grain. Premium leather is almost as good as full-grain leather and has undergone a process in which all kinds of stains or general defects of the cowhide have been sanded or polished.
Superficial grain leather is considered a really strong material and, like full grain leather, can withstand years of wear and tear.
Finally, full grain leather – and that Muller teak was made from the top.
It is made of full grain leather and is the thickest of all skin types. It may be a bit of work to break this skin, but once it has fully adapted to your leg, it will look like a second skin.
Despite the imperfections in the surface due to the condition of the cowhide, quality tanneries such as Horween (see above) do an enormous amount of work in processing the leather without losing many of the amazing properties that full grain leather can offer.
The most remarkable feature of this skin, compared to all the others on our list, is the patina it develops.
Because these shoes are very dressed, they will simply look better and be more comfortable with age, thanks to the unique patina (outer shell) that develops as solid leather (Source).
Where can I leave a comment about HELM boots?
Although the price of these boots is quite high (more per minute), you can be sure that these boots won’t break down after a season. On the contrary, if they are used and maintained regularly (more per minute), you can expect them to last for several years or even ten years.
Can you keep your HELM shoes?
All quality shoes you buy, especially leather shoes, must have one of the following seams on the sole
Although there is a strong argument for the quality of the Goodyear stitch, which is shared here by men’s fashion expert Tanner Guzie, we believe that every shoe with Goodyear or Blake stitch is an excellent addition.
Knowing that full leather boots can be used for years, the last thing you should do is throw them away because of their fragile soles.
Sewing on many of the HELM boots we examined, Blake’s stitch was the obvious choice.
That makes it unique, to say the least.
If you authorize HELM shoes, you can either send them directly to HELM for resale – which is probably always the best result, as they are of course familiar with the design of the shoe itself – or take them to your local shoemaker for resale, which ultimately gives you some flexibility.
You can choose from seven different soles for the care of your HELM boots:
If you work in an area where slippery conditions are common, but still want to wear boots, you can simply choose Black Vibram’s because they offer incredible support (Source).
How do you support your HELMboots?
Well, one of the biggest problems men have when they have a pair of full-grain leather shoes or boots is that they don’t take good care of them.
Unlike normal tennis shoes, which do not require special care, leather shoes require basic care.
In particular, you will want to do the following:
- Use of a shoe tree
- Clean them regularly.
- Correct condition
We just wanted to give a brief summary of some of the most important points here, because we don’t want to go beyond the scope of this article.
Use of Shoetrees
Shoes usually made of cedar not only retain the shape of the leather boot when not in use (which is especially important if you only wear them during the winter months), but they also play an important role in preventing the boot from rotting from the inside out.
The shoe leg is able to remove the moisture remaining at the sip and keep the inside of the shoe dry (and prevents odour accumulation). This is a small purchase (less than $50) that you should make, especially if you want your 400 leather shoes to last for many years.
It is worth mentioning that HELM sells its own shoes.
Some people love it…
If you wear your shoes in winter, salt will be your worst enemy because it eats away the patina of your skin, along with the drying natural oils.
So take your laces out about once a week and wipe the boot with a warm, damp towel and saddle soap.
This should eliminate most of the elements that cause skin damage.
After cleaning the shoe, we (and HELM shoes) strongly recommend the use of a leather air conditioner for the shoe.
This keeps the natural oils in the skin and gives the surface a pleasant, moderate and natural shine.
In addition, regular conditioning of the leather boots ensures their durability.
As a general rule, we recommend that you consider the purchase of this HELM shoe care set.
HELM has also produced a comprehensive guide to boat care here.
Return policy for HELMboots
As is often the case when it comes to shoes, the return and exchange policy is always a bit rigid.
It’s the same with HELM boots.
As you can see on their return policy page:
You have 30 days from the date of purchase to request a refund or exchange.
Of course, the boots must be unworn as well.
One of the positive aspects of the return policy is that the mission is again covered by HELM.
If you live outside the US, you have to pay these costs yourself – fitting a pair of HELM shoes is a slightly larger financial investment.
Like most formal shoes, HELM boots follow the Brannock foot measurement system (the same metal scale used in shoe shops).
What does this mean to you?
Unlike your standard pair of tennis or sports shoes, which are usually a bit larger, you will want to order half a size smaller if you order a pair of HELM shoes.
If you are not sure of your exact shoe size, we recommend that you print out this handy PDF from Dr Scholl to help you.
When it comes to ordering a pair of boots for $400, you will of course be looking for promotional codes or offers to try and get that price down.
According to our research, we found this for HELM shoe shops:
Always free delivery
HELM boots, widely advertised on their website, promote free shipping.
In the era of one- or two-day delivery for massive online stores, it is nice to see that small stores like HELM participate in this service.
In addition, U.S. domestic orders are shipped via priority mail, which guarantees that you will receive your items within approximately one week.
Loan of $50 for your first order
At the time of publication of this article, HELM Boots offered a $50 credit to new customers:
We believe that the lowering of the price caps is a great incentive to get new customers on board. Make sure you check the top banner or footer when you visit the site:
Sales of large models
As with any fashion store, HELM also offers sales at the end of the season.
But here we think that everything at HELM is clearly different from almost every other fashionable online shop.
Given the style of the shoes HELM produces, they are timeless and can be adapted to many outfits.
If we look at their sales page now, we see boots like the Chocolate Pablo (picture below), which are not fashionable and need to look good long after purchase.
In general, we believe that HELM offers good value for money on the sales side, especially in view of the quality of the shoes presented there.
Where are HELM boots made?
We have not found a definitive answer to this question.
Although based in Austin, Texas, HELM seems to manufacture its boots in a variety of locations, including
- Istanbul (Turkey)
- Maine (United States)
- Arkansas (United States)
Even if men only want to buy boots made in the United States, they should at least be aware that some of the materials used in the construction of the boot probably come from American suppliers (e.g. Horween Leather).
Another HELM gearbox sold
Although HELM is known for its great shoes, the company also sells various leather goods and accessories.
Most remarkable is their belt:
Just like her boots, the belts are made of high quality grained leather that will last a lifetime.
Available in different sizes, including the following:
You should have no problem finding the right belt size for you. Keep in mind that when you buy a belt, you usually want to increase the size of the belt because the size of the belt is based on your natural waist size and not on the hips on which the belt is worn.
In short: Don’t buy a belt the same size as jeans, because then the hair would be too long.
In addition to belts, HELM also sells the following products:
- skin care products (discussed above).
- Socks and laces
- Hats and T-shirts
- Accessories (wood for shoes)
Are HELM boots worth their price?
Of course, it’s not easy to pay $400 for a pair of boots.
But here’s the problem:
It’s not the boots that fall apart quickly after a season.
From everything we have found in this report from HELM, we believe that given the quality of the knowledge and materials used in the design and production of these boots, they are similar to other quality footwear companies such as Red Wing, Rancourt (who happen to produce boots for HELM), Thursday Boot Company, etc..
We appreciate that the founder is still involved in the daily activities of the company.
This leads to better product delivery, because they can (and will) make subtle changes to their product range in order to better serve the customer.
What do others think of HELM?
One of the attractions of the internet is that it allows you to quickly take the pulse of the company by doing a little research.
To give us a health test to make sure we weren’t drinking Kool-Aid, we saw some of the following quotes and reviews from other men who were also in love with the company – Review 1, Review 2.
Final remarks about HELM
If you are looking for a high quality download that ages well and lasts for years (provided you maintain it well), I find it an attractive compilation.
The quality of the skin has been tried and tested over time and has been trusted by men for generations.
Of course there are other companies that deserve attention, which we have already mentioned, but since the founder still has an interest in the company, you should not underestimate them.
These boots are an investment and should be considered as such.
So if you’re ready to dive and want to see what good leather boots are, visit the HELM website – we think you’ll like what they have to offer.
