What does this mean?
The word chypre comes from the French word for the island of Cyprus – so yes, you would pronounce it with your best French accent.

These fragrances have a Mediterranean fragrance that contrasts with the top notes of citrus with a warm, woody and mossy base. They offer a refined and powdered olfactory experience.
Chypres is a fragrant version of a perfectly coordinated three-piece suit – they are bold, elegant and you can’t help noticing them.
It is one of the most difficult classes of fragrances to determine what gives them their mysterious appeal. They can be tough, smoky, green or flowery. On the perfume wheel, these scents can be found in different families, from woody to oriental.
What is the history of chypre fragrances?
The fame of these perfumes has generally been acquired by none other than François Coty, a French perfumer of Mediterranean origin. In 1917 Koti published Coty Cyprus for women. With this single Coty has brought heavy flavors into fashion and introduced a new class to the world.
Although Koti certainly deserves praise for his popularity, he was not the first to use this term. In 1909, eight years before Coty Chypre, Guerlain publishedChypre de Paris, and in 1912 D’Orsay published Chypre d’Orsay. These two fragrances were genre-specific peaks that preceded Koti.
But the real history of the stallions goes back much further than Coty, Guerlain or D’Orsay. During the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, Cypriots produced Cipria, a cosmetic face powder with the characteristic scent of the island. In 17.. . In the 19th century a fashion for powdered wigs appeared in Western Europe, making Cirpira one of the most popular cosmetic products of the time.
How does it smell?
Although the exact notes of the fragrance may vary, you can always expect a standard trio of bergamot, oak moss and labdanum. A note of bergamot is a citrus cover, necessary for a classic perfume.
Especially oak moss smells like forest waste – earthy, green and woody. Oak moss and labdan add this earthy, woody heart and complete the scent.
The contrast between citrus and earthy notes creates a real chypre aroma. From that moment on, the perfumer has the freedom to add flair and character with any number of notes.
If you’re looking for advice on this elusive category of fragrances, you’ll find endless articles on chypre for women. However, there is not much information for men about Cyprus. In fact, many sources refer to them as women’s fragrances. But don’t let that distract you. There are many incredible chypre colognes out there, and if you are looking for an elegant, formal and luxurious cologne, you should take a look. We have compiled a list of the best men’s fragrances below. Have fun!
Best budget
David Beckham’s classic blue men’s eau de toilette in spray.
It seems Beckham’s empire is everywhere these days, even in Cologne. David Beckham’s Classic Blue eau de toilette for men is a woody chypre with notes of pineapple, grapefruit, violet, leafy geranium and clary sage. It’s definitely worth checking if you have a budget or just want to taste the perfume. Life expectancy is only a few hours, but at this price you can use it all day without sweating. Comes in a 3.0 ounce bottle.
Best sweet taste
Kitona from Kitona for Mens Eau de Toilette Spray
First introduced in 1996, I remembered Kiton for Men EDT a long time ago. Sweet with top notes of sage, bergamot, lemon amalgam and pineapple. The heart notes are purple and violet, while the base notes are musky, oak, rough, cedar and bean. Normally I think sweet fragrances are aimed at a young audience, but this one seems more mature – I would say more than 30 – would like it. Definition of popular with the ladies. Comes in a 4.2 oz. bottle.
Best citrus fruit
Hermès Terre D perfume spray for men
Hermès created Terre D’Hermès for men in 2008. It is a woody fragrance with a blend of grapefruit, orange, oak and benzene notes. He’s one of those people who’s either loved or hated. Critics believe the orange is too visible. Personally, I find it refreshing and ideal for summer time. At such a price level it can be interesting to try to see which side you fall on before making a blind purchase. Comes in the sizes 1.7 oz, 3.3 oz and 6.7 oz.
Best Classic
Aramis Io de Toiletspray for men
Aramis EDT is probably the most famous modern men’s fragrance. Introduced for the first time in 1992, it is an everyday eau de cologne, ideal for outdoor weekends. It’s got all the classic notes: Absinthe, bergamot, cinnamon and gardenia are mixed in the heart with geranium, patchouli, vetiver and sandalwood, followed by dry down, oak moss and amber grey.
Best total value
Christian Dior Eau Sauvage perfume spray for men
L’Eau Sauvage pour Homme is a solid masterpiece on all fronts. If all you can get is cologne, then it’s a good guess. It is good that all seasons can function day and night. And indeed, with 9 hours of durability when I tried it, it could easily withstand both.
When it was reformulated in 2011, they decided to take a smaller and broader path, so that it has a very simple composition with the top note of bergamot, the middle note of vetiver and the base note of myrrh. It is also an excellent perfume because it is suitable for almost any situation. Comes in a 1.7 oz. bottle.
